Dorothy Wade West nee Peattie
1928 - 2022
C’est avec tristesse que nous vous annonçons le décès de Dorothy Elizabeth Wade West, née Peattie, à l’âge de 93 ans, mercredi le 19 janvier 2022. Chère épouse de Robert Wade West, elle manquera grandement à ses fils, Robert, Tom (Sue) et Matthew (Andrea) ainsi qu’à ses petits-enfants, Thomas (Krysta), Sarah (Craig), Adam et Gillian.
Dorothy est née à Crossford, Fife, Écosse et a étudié à l’école secondaire Dunferline où elle était représentante de classe, par la suite, elle a été acceptée à l’Université St Andrews, où elle a rencontré et est tombée en amour avec Bob. L’histoire anecdotique d’un labrador noir dans la bibliothèque encouragé par Bob-qui faisait rire Maman. Les choses se sont développées à partir de ce moment-là. Après sa graduation, Dorothy a travaillé pour Pan-American World Airways, Division Atlantique, à l’aéroport de Prestwick. Elle et Bob se sont mariés en Écosse en 1953 et ont immigrés au Canada en 1956, ils ont habité à Rothesay (NB) et ont déménagés à Knowlton (Qc) au début des années 1960. En 1963 ils ont acheté leur maison où ils habitèrent jusqu’en 2020.
En 1969, Dorothy et Bob ont acheté l’inventaire d’une boutique d’antiquité d’Abercorn (Qc), qui fermait et ont ouvert leur propre magasin, Griffon Antiques. Ensemble, pendant plusieurs années, ils se sont occupés de la boutique. Maman était « ce que Papa disait » le cerveau de l’entreprise. Si un meuble avait besoin d’une réparation délicate, ou n’entrait pas dans la Peugeot 204 ou la Renault 12 pour la livraison chez un client ou pour une exposition, c’était souvent les petits trucs de Maman qui arrangeaient la situation.
En plus des tâches, difficiles de cogérer trois garçons et une boutique, Maman a toujours trouvé un peu de temps pour faire du ski au Mont-Glen et de jouer au golf au Club de Golf de Knowlton. Pendant un certain temps, elle a enseigné à la maternelle de Knowlton et au début des années 1970, a été enseignante suppléante à l’école secondaire Massey-Vanier. Elle avait suivi une formation d’enseignante et sa spécialité était la géographie.
Plus tard, lorsque Bob pris sa retraite de l’enseignement, ils ont beaucoup voyagé, en France et en Angleterre. Ils ont vécu à temps partiel sur Robertsbridge, East Sussex, entre 1993 et 2003, ils ont également passé plusieurs mois d’hiver à Naples, en Floride jusqu’en 2010, tout en continuant de garder l’œil ouvert pour acheter des objets pour la boutique Griffon Antiques.
Dorothy a été une merveilleuse mère, tout autant qu’épouse, tout en faisant ce que les mamans font de mieux pour leur enfant, à la maison et en dehors, y compris de belles promenades avec les garçons dans le Maine et dans la ville de New York. Il y a eu beaucoup de soirée cinéma au ciné-parc de Derby-Port, Richford et de Bromont et même une fois « après de maintes supplications » un trajet vers les courses de Drags de Sanair.
Dorothy et Bob était un couple amoureux...et maintenant ils sont de nouveau réunis! Merci pour tout Maman. Tu nous manqueras énormément, nous t’aimerons toujours!

We are deeply sorry to announce the passing of Dorothy Elizabeth Wade West, nee Peattie - at age 93 - on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. Dorothy was the beloved wife of the late Robert Wade West and will be dearly missed by her sons Robert, Tom (Sue) and Matthew (Andrea), along with grandchildren Thomas (Krysta) and Sarah (Craig), and Adam and Gillian.
Dorothy was born in Crossford, Fife, Scotland and she attended Dunfermline High School, where she was Head Girl. After high school, she was accepted into the University of St Andrews, where she met and fell in love with Bob. The story is that it was the antics of a black Labrador in the library - encouraged by Bob - which had Mom laughing. And things developed from there. After graduation, Dorothy worked for Pan-American World Airways, Atlantic Division, at Prestwick Airport. She and Bob married in Scotland in 1953 and immigrated to Canada in 1956, living at first in Rothesay NB and then moving to Knowlton in the early 1960s. They purchased a house there in 1963 and were together in that house until 2020.
In 1969, Dorothy and Bob bought the stock from a just-closed antique shop in Abercorn QC and opened their own shop, Griffon Antiques. They ran the shop together for many decades. Mom was - as Dad would often say - the brains of the outfit: If a piece of furniture needed a tricky repair, or if that one extra thing would not fit into the Peugeot 204/Renault 12 for delivery to a show or a customer, it was often Mom’s idea which did the trick.
In addition to the challenging tasks of managing three boys and co-managing a shop, Mom also found a little time to ski at Glen Mountain and to golf at the Knowlton Golf Club. She taught Kindergarten for a time in Knowlton and, in the early 1970s, was a substitute teacher at Massey-Vanier High School. She had trained as a teacher, and her specialty was geography.
Later, after Bob retired from teaching, they made a number of trips to France and England, and they lived part-time in Robertsbridge, East Sussex between 1993 and 2003. They also spent many winter months in Naples, Florida up until 2010, all the while continuing to look for stock for Griffon Antiques.
Dorothy was a wonderful mother as well as spouse, doing all of the things that Moms do best for their children at home and away from home - including some epic drives with the boys to Maine and New York City. There were also many trips to the drive-in movies at Derby Port, Richford and Bromont and once - after some badgering - a drive to Sanair Dragstrip.
Dorothy and Bob were a close, loving couple ... and they are now together again! Thank you for everything, Mom. We miss you, we love you!
