Ralph Harold George

1936 - 2024

Ralph George peacefully passed away at the age of 87, at the Centre Hospitalier de Memphremagog on Monday, February 26, 2024.

Ralph was born on July 1, 1936, to Harold George and Ethel (Magoon) George. He spent his life on the family farm near Vale Perkins, Quebec. From grade one to grade seven he attended the one-room school at Vale Perkins, where his mother was his grade one teacher. He often rode to school on the family work horse, which returned home by herself. Ralph contracted polio during a local outbreak, but with the help of Dr. Gillanders of Mansonville he fully recovered and went on to live a very active life.

Ralph’s childhood was filled with the usual farm chores, and evenings spent fishing at the lake, or in front of the Marconi radio. As a young man, Ralph drove a combine harvester to thrash oats and barley on the home farm, as well as on many farms in the area. He also had a bulldozer that he used to do work in the local area.

During his adult years, Ralph wore many hats. He started out as a dairy farmer, then switched to beef cattle. In his forties Ralph owned and ran a local bar, aptly named Bar Chez Ralph. During the winters he also found time to do snow removal, sugaring, and lumbering.

For many years Ralph organized a barn dance in the early summer that attracted hundreds of area residents; profits were donated to local organizations. He also served as a municipal councilor for consecutive two terms. He was a life-long director and active supporter of the George Cemetery. For leisure activities Ralph played softball, darts, and participated in many wood cutting contests. His cross-cut saw skills were renowned! Deer hunting with his friends and family was one of his greatest joys, something that he did his entire life, even in the fall of 2023. Ralph lived a full and active life; he worked hard, he played hard, and he loved people to a fault.

Ralph married Roberta Bailey in 1958. They had four children: Joanne, Hugh, Sarah, and Jocelyne. In 1970 Ralph married Alice Ingram, and they had one son, John. In 2014, Ralph married Juanita Marsh.

He leaves to mourn his wife Juanita; his sister Brenda Macdonald; his children Joanne, Hugh (Rebeccca), Sarah, Jocelyn, and John (Sandra); his grandchildren Ryan and Justin Carrier, Chelsea, Austin, and Kathryn George, Michelle, Jordan, and Christina Marcoux, Annecy, Lausanne, and Genevieve Hillmuth, Amanda and Sierra George; and his great-grandchildren Marah, Fallon, and Remi Carrier, Thomas Carrier, Benjamin Bucking, Daphne, Alicia, and Kayleb Colgan, Jackson and Julian Marcoux, James Bajsarowicz, Emma-Rose and Hayden Brasseur.

A private funeral will be held at the George Cemetery the morning of Saturday May 11, 2024. A Celebration of Life at the Manson Barn in Austin will follow in the afternoon with his many friends and extended family. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the George Cemetery.

A local legend has passed. Ralph will be forever missed by all who knew him. Arrangements entrusted to the

Going to miss you Ralph you always welcomed me, Mona and Rita into your home when we would come down and visit and made us feel welcomed. I appreciated the road trips on the back roads to look for deer in the evening and the tour you took us on to see the many new homes on Owls Head and the other areas that I had not seen in many years. Going to miss you asking me to get you a beer and the tears in your eyes when we would say goodbye after our visits.
